Hi,
Would like to change existing single pole light switch to attached dimmer switch. I have a live and neutral coming from consumer unit, and live and neutral going to the ceiling light. Both earth cables are joined together. As the dimmer only has three terminals, how do I connect the wiring, as I don’t recognise the symbols above the terminals.
Appreciate your advice.

Hi,

First of all, as always I’d advise you to call a qualified electrician. Turn off your power first. The earths need to be together as do the neutrals. You would then be left with the 2 browns, one is your feed the other is the switch line. Your feed needs to go into the terminal with waves with pointy ends and the S/L to L1.

Regards

The feed would go into L1 The S/L or lines would come from the other/s

Join the neutrals together, and make sure you earth the dimmer and preferably also the back box if metal.

It’s actually the other way round😁 we all learn something new everyday. At the end of the day it actually doesn’t matter which one you put in common and l1

It does, as that's the manufacture's instructions also it could be effected as the dimmer has two outputs.

Also, you said join the earths together and didn't mention earthing of the switch itself.

Hi Guys,

I’m a bit confused. There are two terminals with a wavy line with an arrow going through it. One line is solid and the other is a ‘hooped/broken’ wavy line. The other terminal is on the extreme left in the photo. The two earths are joined. Do I join the two neutrals and connect to a terminal or just join them together? If that’s the case, I connect the two lives and there is a terminal spare? There is no option to add an earth to the switch. I’ve also attached the wiring diagram that came with the dimmer

Live feed in to L1

Neutrals join together

Feed to the light from one of the wavy lines.

Earths join together and to any earth terminals.

You will have a spare wavy line terminal.

If you can't understand that, then you need to get someone competent to do it.
