or would it fail the latest requirements for an electrical report on a 4 bed town house?

There is no law regarding electrical work.
There are no retrospectives regs so why should it fail?

as long as it's safe and complies with BS7671, no problem. i assume you mean because it's not metal cased.

I was told it was because the fuses divided into 2 halves and the main disconnecting switch was only on one side. I was given the estimate of £350 plus £350 for an electrical certificate

Someone is telling porkies and only wants your money. Not ideal but not illegal.

Could you possibly post a picture to confirm?
Agree, someone is being naughty.

it's not up to current regs., but would have been compliant with the regs. at the time it was installed. i would recommend upgrading, but only as a recommend. a bit like an advise on a MOT.it's a matter of choice whether you want to improve the safety of the installation, but not necessary.
there are 3 categories used on a condition report...
C1 is immediate danger. installation unsatisfactory.
C2 is potential danger... unsatisfactory.
C3 is improvement recommended, but satisfactory. i.e safe for continued use.

at worst, the CU might warrant a C3.

Thank you that is very helpful. Any ideas on costs?

£400 - £600 for a straightforward swap. That's for rcbos. cost more if bonding needs doing or any faults are present.

£350 is about right for a dual RCD CU. if you were to go for RCBOs, though, it would be more like £500+. that is assuming that there are no faults on the installation that require rectification.

£350 in total or £700 in total ? Certificates after consumer unit changes are not extra or optional, they are usually included in the price. Or do you mean £350 for a report you have had carried out already ?

The unit itself is not illegal nor will it fail an inspection on its own.
However the report is considering the whole installation and there are a number of reasons why RCD protection would now be required for some of the circuits which aren't protected in the current installation. These items could be either recommended improvements or potentially dangerous and often the most sensible way to add RCD protection to multiple circuits is to replace the consumer unit.

A four bed town house with a fire alarm panel?

the main disconnecting switch was only on one side.
I presume you don't mean that the internal wiring of the distribution board has been altered so that the isolator does not isolate everything within the DB?

I have seen this done before by a complete idiot, along with all sorts of other nonsense which meant half of the installation ended up needing rewired along with a new DB installed.

Was it compliant with the regs applying at the time it was installed?
Is it electrically UNSAFE today?
No problem then
How, if you want to look good to your customer, you might want to recommend an upgrade depending on the situation

Does look like there are a number of non-RCD circuits there that would require RCD protection if installed today.
2nd from the right looks like it’s for a shower.
Not sure whether RCBOs are available for that board?

Hi - noting your alarm panel in the picture and if this is HMO - your local authority can insist on electrical standards beyond the minimum requirements as part of the licence. If you are in doubt whether an upgrade is required I'd suggest contacting them for advice.
