blimey really rattled your cage hasn't it ive only asked for advice Murdoch- ive done it on 3 jobs and now considering going NIC why is that such a problem to you?how do people normally start out? im sorry i asked!

At least he's thinking about that, M. More than many do. Think how many we hear about doing odd jobs without the the slightest intention of carrying out a test with cert.
With some of the underpricing going on by so called 'domestic installers', I think he may be a be one of those with a case for more optimism. Not condoning it, but...

Sounds absolutely fine what you are doing mate. I would defiantly carry on as you are as nothing will come of it. In fact it is exactly the same as the NICEIC QS system really but at least your brother in law actually looks at the job before signing it off!! There are god knows how many firms doing that everyday. If you are only doing a few jobs save your bucks and have a nice holiday with it!

I'm not a smart arse, not really sure what gave you that idea. The fact that I didn't give an opinion meant I couldn't give an opinion because I didn't know what the benefits where. Like the op I work for a company and was interested to read the replies and IMHO only a few of them mattered.

The question was this....

My question is: is it worth me joining A registered body even though i may not do a lot of private work, whether it be NIC,Nappit or elecsa and sign these off my self or is there another alternative-is any one else in the same predicament?

I do not know the exact cost of the fees involved to go with one of the governing bodies. I have no idea of how much PL insurance costs. I have no idea how much his local council charge to register his work. I could go on but don't think I need to.

Maybe I misunderstood the part that said 'my question is' if I did then I apologise?

If your asking if I have a problem with what he's doing then no. I don't. I'm not the electrical police nor do I work for the nic or whoever enforces the rules (never actually seen any rules be enforced)

Micky I think what upsets members like Murdoch and other members is that these guys pay their fee's and have to do everything by the book and have to try and do all this while still trying to stay competitive in a cut throat industry that is rapidly going down the pan. Then new members come on talking about doing private jobs ( cash in hand I presume ) while holding down a job ( guaranteed income ) it can take the pi$$ sometimes, just my take on things.

Thanks for all the replies gents the helpful and the unhelpful-judging by some people responses my qualifications ,gold card and 11 years experience (inc apprenticeship) obviously aren't good enough for some of the self appointed experts on here-they must of been expert electricians from birth..lol

You are not complying the building regs, nor want to understand or comprehend what you should be doing. Its got absolutely NOTHING about being an electrical expert.

who ever said anything about cash in hand? not taking the mick at all if they want to work for themselves its their choice, just cant see how all these electricians joined an affiliated scheme straight away-they obviously didn't. you need to jobs to show to the NIC for goodness sake! what do they expect you to do pull one out your bum!

Have you registered with HMRC as self employed for your "own jobs"?
