I am installing an external light to the side of my house. There is an existing light in place but the supply cable exits the house in the wrong place for the new light. So I am using 25mm plastic conduit and weatherproof plastic junction boxes to bring the supply to the correct place on the...
Hi Everyone, I have what looks like a BT telephone line distribution box which was installed over 30 years ago (residential). Photos of it are attached. I think it was used to connect multiple phone sockets. I now have a new fibre socket for phone and modem. I no longer need multiple sockets so...
Over the years as a DIY-er I've used the old brown 30A circular junction boxes to add spurs to ring mains. I like them as they are strong, secure and visible. I've ALWAYS followed the rules on domestic electricity . Until earlier this year I've been able to check with a cousin who's a...

Hello folks, could anyone advise where to get hold of blanks to cover the open fuse slots in this old Wylex bakerlite fuse box please ?
As well as the exposed 2 x line wires (red), terminals and bus bar - there is no lid to cover all the fuses.
The house owner said they have a quote to replace...
have a 4 inch junction box. Will a 3 light vanity fixture plate fit on the 4 in box? I keep reading about 3 1/2 box, yet the fixture plate has adjustable looking slots
Hi all, does anyone happen to have a blank pdf for this checkbox, to keep a log of your calibration checks or have a link to where I can get a copy? Much appreciated.
Hello,
Newbie to this forum here in the U.S.
My 1970's house has a main/sole electric panel with a dedicated 20A circuit breaker for the furnace.
In the next room, 20 feet away, there is a small junction box with a switch and 15A type T fuse controlling the furnace.
I'm guessing the switch box...
Hi guys,
Quick question, I've had some people say to earth a plastic junction box with piranhas etc. whereas some people saying there's no need, since it's plastic?
I have the 5 terminal adaptable junction box from Screwfix (image attached)
From the inside of the house I have twin & earth...
Most people hear about these urban myths that if you balance your breaker box then you can save all this money. I know enough about electricity and enough electricians to know this is false. My question is a little different. I have a 100 amp breaker in my box that has never been on on my life...
So, for a bit of completely pointless fun really, does this antique looking item that was acquired entirely for novelty/aesthetics value work, what is it for, and how accurate is it?
Until very recently I had no answer to any of those questions. It caught my eye at a car boot sale and I liked...
Does anyone know what this box on the outside of my house might be for? It has four pipes going into the ground. The four pipes coming in all have a single blue, white, and green 12-gauge wire. All similar-colored wires are simply connected inside the box. I was hoping to run a new wire out of...
Hello everyone,
I hope you are all doing well in these trying times.
I'm planning an extension to my house, and I'm looking to have a second consumer board fitted inside the extension. I'm hoping I can feed this new board from the meter box and not as a sub-board from the original consumer unit...
Hi,
I’m looking at adding an external socket on my house. I have a external junction box which is fed from the main consumer unit, in the junction box is a connector block which feeds a SWA cable which goes under my patio to my garage. In the garage is a smaller consumer unit which has a socket...
Hi does anybody know of single / double PVC back boxes that have multiple 20mm knockouts like metal clad? Or are plain with no knockouts ?
The ones with one 20mm and trunking knockouts don't really work as when cutting the 20mm hole the trunking entry normally splits even when bracing it.
Thought I’d share my experience from earlier on today to see if anyone else has had any relatively simple jobs that have turned into a nightmare lol!! Was changing a lighting joint box, marked the cables and must have been too busy chatting to apprentice that I’ve muddled up 2 of the reds...
I’ve bought some new sockets but due to the terminals being the other way round when compared to the original socket. I’m looking for a way to extend the line as it’s just too short. Absolutely no slack on the cables. I’m quite amazed really as I’ve 10 to swap, some were okay, and the last one...
