I am installing a 6mm armoured cable to supply a detached garage with a 2-way DB with 30mA protection. the supply cable is NOT buried but goes overhead on a suspended wire. my? is does the supply cable need rcd protecting? if so do i need to discriminate some how or will it be100mA?

this is a domestic installation.

Do you have RCD protection at the main db? If so why not put the whole installation on the RCD side and use a main switch in the garage board!;)

there is no rcd protection at main but the client doesnt want to walk back to the mains if something trips. he just wants to reset it in the garage.

The sub main does not require RCD protection, as long as its swa, if the sub CU has an RCD main switch or RCBO's on each circuit.

The submain does not have to be rcd protected because it has earthed armouring but I think that you cannot extend the pme out to the garage you will need to install a earth rod so is a seperate system.

True, but only if theres
Extraneous conductive parts in the detached building, (gas, water supplys ..etc..Otherwise its not needed
