I guess if I knew the resistance of the Primary coil I could calculate it ? but wondered if anyone had a reference guide to current consumption when a 110V tool is not in use ?

ya won't be able to calculate it from the winding resistance anyhow

i'd guess the standby usage depends on kva rating or size

it might be on the nameplate or spec sheet even

Of course it isn't a purely resistive circuit is it. Just looked at some specs on line it gives Iron losses and power losses but no actual definitive figure

The impedance will be made up of the inductive reactance and the resistance. This will determine the total current drawn but it is only the resistance that will dissipate energy. The inductive reactance is associated with the wattless power but not energy loss. In addition there will be some energy loss due to hysteresis and possibly a small amount due to electronic jiggery pokery. From the figures given i am not sure you can calculate the idle losses and the ones you are looking at refer to efficiency under continuous load, not idle, and so will involve energy losses from both primary and secondary windings.

I would not be surprised if idle losses are much smaller as it could be under electronic control that senses when there is no load.

shove a clamp meter on it!

no, take the top off the unit ( 4 screws) and clamp around the live conductor inside the housing. you are right in saying you have to clamp around only one conductor
