Hi all,

Following etiquette, here's an introduction.

I passed my half century less than a month ago, and six months prior to that was made redundant after 30+ years in the same job... a job I had no training for and kind of "grew" into. It suited me and I it, but business was not growing so the owner called it a day and made the rest of us redundant. Having no qualifications I spent a lot of time researching and thinking about what I could do, what I'd like to do, and what I could get training to do. I looked at getting qualifications in what I had been doing (a mixture of management and programming), but that really is a young person's game. Anyway, after much deliberation I came to the conclusion that I'd like to be an electrician and enrolled on a course with forum sponsor TradeSkills4U. I finish the course in a few weeks. I've been working with a local contractor pretty much since I started the course (November), and, though I'll have all my exams passed and certificates in hand within a few weeks, one thing I've learned on the job is that I won't actually start learning until I'm out there doing it full time.

The course has been great, but I'm looking forward to putting what I've learned into practice and actually earning money again. I know I'm not going to be earning much to begin with, but the contractor I'm working with seems happy with me, I just hope I can (and think I will) improve much quicker when I'm with them full time, and I hope my pay goes up accordingly. That redundancy is really starting to look small now, after six months of very little income. Hey ho. Onwards and upwards.

I look forward to participating in this forum.

Welcome

Welcome satori, keep working with the contractor and put into practice what you've learnt on the course. In honesty you'll need to work under and with the contractor for 2 - 3 years to start really understanding, especially if the work is diverse enough.
Read this forum it is pure gold when you read and re read the technical threads and look up the information yourself.
All the best, get involved as much as possible.

Welcome to the forums :)

welcome, if you're anything like me then you'll love it. I won't lie I've had weeks at work where I hate it but then a month or 2 later the job completely changes again and I can't wait to get back to work. When I left school I hadn't even put up a shelf and now I'm doing this.
As long as you have a passion for it then you'll love it.
