Nothing to do with dogs,

A customer has got a manky old CU in a cupboard in his kitchen. I'm doing the wiring in the kitchen and he wants me to put the new CU in a cupboard above the worktop.

He doesn't want any trunking and to get the tails up to the cupboard I would have to chase the tails in:eek:

Is this do-able? Would I have to mechanically protect them against nails etc?

I know it's not ideal, but I can't think of any other way I can do it.

Thoughts?
 
Where is the meter in relation and what route are the tails currently taking, personally i wouldn't chase them in, how about installing a fused isolator and then running in a split concentric cable?

Meter is on the other side of the wall mounted outside. tails currently run through the wall and into kitchen.

They're also 16mm at the mo with 100A cutout!

Whatever I use to get up to this cupboard has got to go in the wall.

Is split con the best way to go? Why split con over swa?

I've never had a go with split con, what's it like to terminate compared to swa?

just seen another thread on the IEE forum an a bloke on there was going to chase them in and cover them in 3mm steel plate as protection.

If I used SWA would that do for "protection"?
 
I thought that neither of those methods could be taken to be protection against nails, screws etc.

i know the whole "protection" thing is a grey area but I'm just thinking about after I'm long gone, I don't want someone (daft homeowner) putting a screw into a 25mm tail!
 
well technically if it's going straight up it's in a safe zone. Plus if the person puts a nail through the earthed capping it will only short between the capping and the tail, there is only so far you can go. You would have to be going some to put a nail through 32mm galv conduit :D

Will I be able to squeeze 2x25mm tails and a 16mm earth into 32mm galv?

It's in a kitchen so I think the safe zones will need either mechanical or RCD protection if they're going in the walls. (I await correction)

I'm leaning towards 25mm tails chased in and 3mm plate for protection.
 
It may get a bit tight but it should go. Have a look at 522.6.6 gives some pretty good pointers.

Hmmm, yes, seems according to 522.6.6, if they're enclosed in earthed conduit or earthed trunking that would appear to comply.
