Is there anywhere in the regs that says you cannot connect solid cores with flexibles, I cannot seem to find anything

No, there is no specific Reg, but 526 is where you should be looking.
Basically, all connections should be sound, both electrically and mechanically.
Depending on size of conductors/ space available, then the Wago levered version connector would be ideal.
