A family member is the secretary of a 'private members sports club' which is in a very nice area has quite well off members, they currently have a ' retired member' who is a pseudo maintenance man/electrician who does the odd jobs for his membership fees, if they need any contract work they invite estimates from local builders/plumbers and award work accordingly. The advadvantage to me is the members are evry incestuous and there will be shed loads of private work coming from it

I have been asked if I want a contract there as maintenance/electrician/plumber one day a week with some degree of flexibility. In the main it will be general maintenance, changing lamps etc. I see the benefit of having a foot in the door for larger work and access to the members for other work. I have plumbing friends who I can sub work to if it is beyond me plumbing wise.

Any views on whether to price on an hourly rate with a set day to pick up any work or a set day rate one day a week, and what those rates should be? I don't really want to be clicking my heels if I am done and would prefer a planned maintenance approach where I rock up complete any work and then go and charge them accordingly.

Has anyone got any experience or views on this type of contract/work?

As of Oct this year after which this contract will start I will be self employed, I will be director of a Ltd Company under which all work will be undertaken.

I have no experience of that sort of arrangement, but I charge on the most economical basis for the customer, switching between hourly and day rate as required to achieve that.

The logic is simply it's less hassle to go somewhere and work all day than it is to go to 4 or 5 smaller jobs, so I pass that 'saving' on to the customer. Plus, it builds trust that you aren't ripping them off.

I think in this case, I'd carry on with that scheme, unless you agree with them that if the job list is done, you'll do preventative maintenance. Maybe a bit of electrical testing here and there, kind of work through an EICR for the place piece meal, check for dripping taps and other stuff like that and fill your time that way and just charge a day rate.

Sounds like lots of small jobs, so set your minimum charge carefully.

Where in the UK are you?

Hi,bud,i have association and work links,to several small members only entities...and jointly run a clay shooting club.

Your work, you will do in your sleep.
The rate, whether hourly or daily, will be paid, even if sporadic.

Your real issue, will be the two pees...politics and personalities.

Golf,shooting,narrowboats,scouts...i've seen more carry-on than a coppers torch, out in the world, they'd get the good news...but in the hidden environment of a private club,it can be Nero's banquet :)

Of course, the establishment you are wooing, may be a joyous haven of democracy...
