Hi Guys,

New here, looking for some advice from experienced served guys when it comes to tendering/pricing jobs. Ive now been working for myself for the past few years although with not a huge amount of growth as to what I’d of hoped, albeit restricting what projects to undertake/tender for due to lack of knowledge in tendering and not wanting to sink myself for a complete gamble on cost. With no former training in pricing or estimating for the past few years I’ve been pricing with a basic skill set of estimating labour plus cost of materials and mark up, or by point on small domestics.

Although some people have a good head for estimating labour times these can be fairly adverse amongst many (which unfortunately makes me doubt myself when questioned by a QS). I have tried to use Spons but also find this long winded and also not sure if I’m taking the correct approach as surely each cable run should not have to be measured and then times by x amount of minutes per meter plus cost of materials per meter.

I have produced my own spreadsheets with my own costing although I would still not feel comfortable using this on a high value contract and would like a comparison before either embarrassing myself or sinking myself. I also understand everyone’s costs alternate due to cost of overheads, area etc but surely there must be a ball park figure with tolerances for smaller/larger companies.
I’m London based and also serve the Home Counties although I apply the same rate across both undertaking mainly high end residential, commercial install and reactive maintenance.

Sorry for the long read guys, just wanted to give abit of info. If there are any guys out there that could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

Many thanks, Rrs
