I still come across a few houses with lead piping and I had one yesterday which had both the gas and the water pipes all still in lead? I don't like fitting earth clamps to lead pipe because it's so soft and I always imagine the steel clamp migrating through the material and eventually causing a puncture!

Any experiences out there regarding new earth clamps on old lead piping???

should be no problem on water pipe. lead water pipe was thick walled. not too sure about lead gas pipe though. think it's relatively thin walled. maybe a constant pressure spring clamp would be advisable here. or, if you can find a "proper" plumber to fit a section of copper in.

If you can get your hands on a piece of lead pipe just have a look at the wall thickness. Even the thinner walled gas pipe you would have to be He-Man to crush it with a clamp.
If your that worried about it use constant pressure springs, but I think your worrying about nothing.

I'm sure I read somewhere that standard earth clamps on lead are not a good idea because the lead deforms slowly under the pressure of the clamp, so a clamp that starts off tight will become loose after a period of time.....possibly theory rather than real life??,but I'd go with the constant pressure clamps as well.

could always use a self tapper and a lug.

course it bloody well is if it.s coming out the ground

look up where?

so, what do you do with it? lead water and gas pipes are extraneous conductive parts. it's not just copper that conducts. as i said, where is your reference in the regs. that says don;t bond lead pipes?

not got it to hand as doing some certs

well, when you've finished the certs, turn some pages in the brb or bgb and give me a reg. no.
