Farm lighting

Hi guys,

Domestic electrician here, not really done much else. Father in law has asked me to install lights up a path on his farm, but wants them to be able to be controlled via a switch and a seperate PIR if possible. The feed we have is off an existing light which will be removed, and the lights will be 10w security lights mounted on wooden posts along a path/driveway.

Can anyone advise me how I'd go about installing this? Would it be possible to have the 16(ish) security lights switched via three or four separate PIR sensors and still have the ability to be overridden by a switch?

All depends on the type of PIR you get mate.
Some can have an override function, where you switch them On-Off-On within a certain time, and then they stay on.
I'm sure someone will be able to suggest a make.

Yes, hi spec do them, by switching them off and on again.

It's possible to wire in a switch to 'override' the PIRs, though to do so in your case with one switch you'd have to have all the PIRs wired together such that any one coming on would trigger the others (Or have a switch for each PIR).

Wiring a switched live to the output of one PIR (or each PIR if you separate the switches) would then bypass the PIR and turn on the lights.

I did a smaller installation recently with a Click mode grid switch that had a DP switch for isolation, then a 1 way switch so that the lights were in 'auto' mode when off, and manual mode when on. Used 3 core + E cable from the switches to the PIR (Line to PIR in, switched manual line to PIR out, neutral), then 2 core to the light.

Or the "off and on again" option may be simpler as that should override all the PIRs together - just ensure you use PIRs that do that.
