Discuss gas meter earth bonding in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

Hi, why is it not possible to earth a gas meter via the earth of the nearest socket outlet?
Especially if the meter is on the opposite side of the house to the consumer unit?
Thanks

The earth in a socket is a cpc not a bonding conductor and is generally sized at 1.5mm - 2.5mm maybe on a RFC but definitely not 10mm or 16mm directly connected to the MET.

OP, look in your regs book for the 'requirements' for a Main Protective Bonding Conductor.
If you want to know the theory why, look elsewhere. Friday night might not be the best time to ask on here! :)

Yeah but " my electrician says I need it, but there is an earth at the socket already. Why don't you just connect to that" (eyes rolling). When will customers stop going on forums and asking questions to try and catch out their electrician

For the genuine replies, I say thank you.
For the other comments, i say, it doesn't encourage novices or customers to post actual concerns and/or questions.
Thanks
