Discuss How does it work? 3 phase RCD in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

Hi,

One thing is bugging me. I can't work out how a 3 phase RCD works.

A single phase is simple, opposing currents in an electromagnet.
If the phases are unbalanced then it induces a current and therefore a magnetic field.

In a three phase system, the phases are not in balance, so how does it work.

I've been trying to get my head around this for a while and have given up.

Google has not helped, there are squillions of descriptions for a single phase, and the only description for a 3 phase is kind of funny (see wikipedia).

So anyone out here know?
