Hi,

was wondering if anyone in the sheffield area was willing to take on a NVQ 3 qualified electrician. I'm wanting more experience before I start to take on work. The only catch is I'm still working full-time (not in the electrical industry) so any saturday work for free labour would be much apprecitated. I do have my own transport as well.

Regards,
Matthew

I thought to achieve NVQ level 3 you had to be working as an electrician to complete your portfolio. I would be interested to hear how you got it as with your own admission you need practical experience and do not work as an electrician!

just start buying your own tools and get out there and do like for like fittings etc. just dont give up and create leads and chase every lead like a greyhound.

but if youve only got the 2330 level 3 then you will only ever be able to work alongside a qualified sparky, you wouldnt be able to go out on your own

you dont need any qualifications to go out on your own (or experiance so it seems with some on here)
I do feel it is fraudulant to claim to be an electrician and charge customers for work if the above applies.

I've spoke to all Government Approved bodies, all I have to do is complete a big job e.g change of cosumer unit, carry out inspection and testing on all circuits and demonstrate to the assessor that I'm competent in conducting the CRIPPLER and all aspect of the installation comply with BS7671.

this is all very interesting to me :D So youre saying you only need 2330 level 3 and not the nvq level 3 or part P to go out legally and start doing domestic? This is good as i have the 2330 level 3 but not the nvq level 3

just give one of the electrical schemes a call, they will advise you accordingly and send you out a pack to get registered and assessment details

the whole lot is competance plus part p for you guys in england , but is better to have the quals if going to take on a job so the boxes get ticked when you at interview or the likes of.

I've spoke to all Government Approved bodies,.

when you spoke to the government bodies did you describe yourself as nvq level 3 trained or 2330 level 3 trained?

having a nvq level 3 means youre a fully qualified sparky.
Having a 2330 level 3 means youre an improver who has to always work alongside a fully qualified sparky.

I only ask because youve described yourself twice on these forums as nvq level 3 trained, when in fact youve only got the 2330 level 3.

If you described yourself to the government bodies as NVQ level 3 trained they would assume you were a fully qualified electrician and the advise they subsequently gave you would be completely different than if you had described yourself as 2330 level 3 trained.

Heres the JIB definition of an improver...

When the standard that is proposed to regulate our industry advises us that you just need to be a competent person (See definition in the BS 7671-2008) to carry out any electrical, and does not set down a standard of what is expected to be that competent person, then no wonder we have problems.

All the City and Guilds this and City and guilds that, is just a yardstick and a semi proof if anything went wrong that your indeed that competent person, so if the IET can't figure it out, what chances do the schemes have.

The schemes will enroll a semi dyslexic chimpanzee into them, as long as one he can speak English, two he has a calibrated meter, three nice lot of papers and the most important the money to pay them.

i can appreciate that the path to being "competent" isnt fixed. An old boy whos been doing the tools for 40 years would be classed as "competent" regardless of whether or not hes done relevant qualifications.

Ive always thought "competent" would demand either qualifications or significant experience. The OP has admitted he hasnt the qualifications and is only qualified to 2330 standard.

And as for experience, are people really suggesting that if i did a 12 week course and did the 2330 level 3 and some free work for a sparky every weekend that i would be classed as competent?

Or changed a distribution board and tested everything that that would be good enough to prove to someone that im competent to do all house electrics regardless of whether or not i have part p?

I mean if it were that simple that would be fantastic for me because that would mean Im "competent" as i have the 2330 and some experience.

But if it were that simple then why on earth are people doing apprenticeships?

the nvq 3 portffolio is more than just a consumer change its 8 individual units about the different areas of installation and then you have to do the 8 units again!! on a different side of electrical installation for example stage 1 domestic stage 2 commercial, also there has to be a six month gap between stages so its not a quick thing to do, most apprentices take 18months to do their write up to do it properly while gaining the experience. and your forgetting the am2 which most colleges wont allow you to sit until your either complete or say 75% done on your nvq 3

Basically there you summed it up Bob and there are numerous threads on here arguing who is or isn't Competent.

The bottom line to this, as we stand the only yardstick to competency is a set of ad hoc qualifications. You can according to our industry now do a 5 week DI course and be competent in doing domestic Installation.

There is nothing stopping me if I so wished carry out any electrical work on domestic/commercial/industrial, if I found someone stupid enough to let me, and have no experience, qualifications or anything, it is just if things went wrong and I could not prove that competency, by qualifications, not 40 yrs experience, I may be in trouble.

At least the domestic schemes ask for a bare minimum of perhaps the BS 2382 qualification, for commercial/industrial I could blag someone and talk a good job and be let loose as a competent person, knowing not a thing about electrical work.

There is suppose to be changes in the schemes, that to join a scheme soon you will need that NVQ level 3, but it was suppose to be implemented this summer, and I'm not sure if it as.

There are several of us on here that are pretty glad we are coming to an end of our time in this industry as it has been decimated, by governments, training providers, and to an extent companies who now consider us to be semi skilled.
