The G83 certificate does not mean that the system therefore needs no prior notification. It means that it's safety system and configuration are set up to G83 rules.

I'd be very careful about installing systems above 16A and hoping for the best - you could find that it will bite you on backside if you're not careful.

Many thanks for the welcomed advice ..... I shall certainly be more aware now, as I progress along my learning curve.

Reading this thread made me nervous as I'm now planning to get Sanyo 250W system adding to 4kWp. Good info here, how to find my DNO etc. etc. thanks. I also found this page in internet:

Western Power Distribution - What size solar PV system can I connect to qualify as a G83 single installation?

It says that in 4kWp system I could use an inverter that has 92% or less effiency but 4000TL is way over that. Irritating, why does there has to be this 16A limit when FIT scheme allows 4kWp, why not 20A and it would be so much easier...

My question to you is: Is the G59/2 application difficult and would it also cost more? If so it might not be worth doing for the sake of few Watts... (edit: I mean "not worth going over 16Amps[...]")

You could always use a Power One PVI3.6 inverter as all the UK models are clamped at 16 amps. You may think this would result in lower output but as the inverter is undersized (3.6 for a 4.0kWp system) then you utilise it's optimum effeciency more frequently (they should have covered that in your training?).

On the point of applying through G59 for a 4kWp unclamped installation then you may open your customer up to the risk of the DNO taking the opportunity to get your customer to pay for local upgrades.

I must say that in one incident a customer of ours was receiving low voltage, sometimes as low as 190v. The DNO monitored this and ended up putting an extra phase in to his little hamlet of 8 houses who were all on one phase previously. So they do honour their duties.
