Got a call out for a shower not working, only to find that it had been wired in a 2.5 radial from the DB. Needless to say, the (metalclad) fuseboard had melted along with the cable!

Thankfully no house fire this time.

Unbelievable.

Fecking HELL!!!! sorry for language but jesus!!!! hope the home owner learnt an important if not expensive lesson!!!

GEDC4126.jpg its suprising what people do here a pic of a shower i found wired in 1.5mm 3 core flex tapped off the ring main via a junction box

Had EXACTLY the same thing today on a PIR. Apparently her daughter's boyfriend put it in. Luckily the thing hadn't worked for months...... the very badly terminated cable had literally burned straight through the unprotected 3036 board's busbar. Also on the same job. some bright spark had connected the phase to the earth lug in the bathroom light. Class.

i have seen a 8kw shower on 1mm flex, plug top, fuse wrapped in tin foil, plugged into the landing.

But 2.5 T&E can run anything, you can bury it in the ground, use it overhead and underwater what's the problem?

Boggles the mind.

Am going back on Sat to run a 10mm and replace fuseboard. Didn't have time to do thorough inspection, so God knows what issues I'll come across then.

Apparantly he'd bought the house from a 'DIY enthusiast' .

Had the same problem in a house once..there on an unrelated matter in the loft. Stood on a cable which crunched under my boot. Lifting away some insulation (200mm thick!) i found a 2.5mm cable over a joist that was shot to bits! Melted, copper showing you name it.

Turned out it was the 10kw recently installed shower. Wired from an exsiting 4mm up to the loft then in a JB to the 2.5mm direct to the shower with no pull cord or means of isolation. And low and behold a nail in the 15amp rewirable fuse.

Needless to say it was noted to the client who was horrifed and a new 10mm cable was installed via a seperate RCD board. Keeps us business i suppose but scary non the less.
