I went to replace the CU at my parents house last week (Wylex re-wireable). The live and neutral look to be about 16mm twin (not t&e) and come through the wall from next door. As they weren't home I have no idea what the earthing arrangement is there. My parents house is still earthed via the main water supply..... ah bugger.

What regulation/rule prohibits using water mains as earth? I want some ammunition to get the supplier to sort the earth out, and to replace/upgrade the incoming feed. Maybe then I can sort the new board!

I know that the supplier only has to maintain the earth if they supply one, but if I find an earth on the incoming line next door it should be passed on, shouldn't it? The neighbour had their feed upgraded a few years ago, and my dad went to speak with the sparkys doing the job, who said that his house was not on the job sheet so nothing was going to be done... they didn't even report it!

Bit of rant, but if anyone has any advice, I'd appreciate it.
