i bet its quite in-efficient, especialyl in the summer, when the ground is really dry.

I've come across a similar system in central Africa. It can be prone to high touch voltages if earth integrity isn't monitored. The 1.2 meter earth spikes in disturbed ground that seem to be all the rage in the UK wouldn't come close to the earth required.
