Hi everyone,

Hoping for some advice here.

Situation is that I decided to retrain at 27 and due to mortgage and bills I could not afford to take 3+ years as an apprentice on very low wages. I took the decision to take a number of courses at Able Skills in Dartford and use my savings to pay for the course as well as subsidizing myself over the course period.

I spent 4 months there doing my 2365 levels 2 and 3, 17th Edition Wiring Regulations and 2394/95 Inspection and Testing. In the last year I have also been working on my Level 3 NVQ, which in turn will lead onto the AM2 exam.

For the last 2 years I have been working in a domestic firm working my way up and have completed 80% of the NVQ folder however I have struggled with the commercial side of it. My tutor at Able Skills informs me I need 2 site visits for them to see me being able to do different types of containment and cabling as well as a few other parts of the NVQ that need to be done from a commercial or industrial aspect.

I have had trouble trying to find jobs due to the fact I am only an Improver and need this final piece of the puzzle. I am debating going self employed to do contract work which hopefully would enable me to finish the NVQ however I worry that I may still struggle for work and with a mortgage payments, bills and a wife looming overheard I am unsure as to whether this would be the right move.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Tony

If your domestic firm are good to you then perhaps you could explain the situation and ask if they have any contacts doing industrial work that may be able to use you for a few jobs, perhaps on an exchange basis, to allow you to get the NVQ completed.
