Hello there.
I recently had a new kitchen installed. There is a large switch that lights up when switched on above the oven and hob. I thought this switch had to be on for the oven or hob to work. However the oven and hob work if this switch is off or on, it seems to make no difference at all. I asked the installers and they said that due to new regulations the switch has to be now 'optional'.
Can this be true?

Thanks for any help.
Cheers

It is an electric oven and hob.
They had to move the switch as I have move the kitchen to another a wall. So it is a whole new install.

Errr , possibly 3 x cables at the switch. 1 x feed, 1 x oven, 1 x hob. Possibly wrong connections made within the wall switch.
Check if either appliance actually switches "off" with the wall switch in the OFF and ON positions( ignore neon light if one used)
I got sneaky feeling that only one appliance will be operated by the wall switch. Possibly the oven.

Sounds like a BS excuse for a BS job to me. Forgetting the issue of the neon, if a switch doesn't switch then it's not a switch and might just as well be a lump of jam.

Then they are bil5hitting you mate, get them back.
And btw the switch should be to the side of the hob, not above it where you need th reach over it to switch off

Don't bother getting them to come back.
It sounds like the installer was a cowboy and fed you a line of bull manure.
Get an electrician to come and check it out.
If you can, get one by recommendation. If not get a local niceic or select registered electrician.

And that would solve the problem?? NICEIC, .... I think NOT!! Most of them will be your Electrical Trainee brigade!!

These day's you can only go by reputation and recommendation from trusted sources!!

The OP is in Scotland which would imply that any NICEIC spark is an approved contractor not a DI.
however I do agree that reputation and recommendation is the best way to go.

ha, ha, again. Yes.

You know, we never had this sort of confusion in the "old days" when we measured things in Yards, Feet and Inches.

We would say something like: "Put it six feet along from the meter" and everyone would know what we were on about.

Nowadays, we're all expected to embrace these cillimetre things and we get things like: "Put it two meters along from the meter." or "Put it two metres along from the metre." when what is really meant is: "Put it two metres along from the meter." Confusing innit?

Things really were much easier - and better - in the old days. :)

And you would go back to pounds, shillings and pence? I wouldn't

Actually, yes I think I would.

Changing from Sterling to Decimal was the start of galloping inflation. I remember being able to by a bar of chocolate for sixpence (or 2 and a half pence "new money") the week before decimalisation, and within a few weeks afterwards the same bar of chocolate cost 5p - that's double the price.

You need to get out more. lol

That said, the French still show the "Franc" price on most super market shelves.

Tell me about it!!

Unfortunately, my Toyota MR2 MK2 with the 3 litre V6 is still knackered, so I've had my wings clipped a bit ...... :(

Got a nice Celica convertible with 4 wheel steering to play with though, but the weather isn't too clever & its hood leaks a bit ........ :driving:

Shame, you can only just afford your Steradent now Geordie, remember when they were 20p? :cool3:

An MR2 a girly hairdressers car? Mine was truly terrifying (in a good way) it wasn't madly fast but it got up to speed phenomenally quickly

I'm starting to get very worried about you lot..has no-one got a proper car? I'll give you examples of my current crop so you get the idea..

Range Rover Vogue SE
Discovery 3 TDV6
Discovery 300TDi (Off road and recovery use as it has a 12,000Ib winch on it)
Volvo D5 (Chipped to 211bhp and 489Ib/ft)
Aston Martin V8 Vantage Volante (1992 vintage)

Now they are proper cars!!

Well I had a MK2 .... "G" reg that was a standard 2 litre straight 4 and loved it, but the tin worm got to it and it had to go.

It was replaced by a MK3 standard 1.8 straight 4 that I never liked and after a few hundred miles the engine grenaded.

I then bought a MK2 with a 3 litre V6, but it's needing an engine rebuild 'cos it's knackered - like me.

Meanwhile, I have this 1990 Celeica thing that's 4 wheel steering, convertible and I'm told is very rare and worth a lot of money. Underneath, it's immaculate and it shifts a bit too off the line..... but it isn't an MR2 Mk2 with a V6 .....
