I have just replaced a consumer unit for a customer and they want a certificate, the only problem i have is that there a faults and bad wiring through out the property (alot of diy)
i dont understand what im ment to do. I said that the lighting needs rewiring but the3y wont pay for it. i dont want anything in the house under my name as i know its not to regulations and wont pass please help.

you could do a EIC for CU change and note deviations on it. in the box " extent of work covered" put CU change only. have they paid you for the CU change?

i have been paid for cu change but was going to do a full test but when i started looking in loft i started finding diy things done but not even good cables twisted together etc told them but the say no to having it fixed no more money but i dont think its safe without a periodic or rewire but they wont pay ?

its your responsibility to leave the property in a safe condition! lock off the dangerous circuits if you have to.

Jaybill you have fell into the old trap of just want a new CU thats all no fuss just a new CU and then when you put it in you get "are you not supposed to give me a test certificate for this" ? "Well I think you will have to or I will report you "

You need to get this sorted at the start this is not a lecture we have all been bitten in the past one way or the other. What you can say is this was not agreed on and if they push it then say well I will need to give you a price to rectify the faulty circuits

You must do an EIC for the work you have done but make sure you state clearly exactly what you have done in the extent covered box.

If it is as bad as you say and they refuse to have any further work done, then issue them with a danger notification cert which they must sign aswell as you.

Did you carry out any pre change checks before the CU change???

when i do a CU change i test the circuits first(IR checks) and check the wiring at a few points by removing sockets/switches and if possible pop your head thru the loft hatch , which gives you an idea what you are up against.

sorry to point this out but pointless doing a IR test if there is no continuity readings always continuity then IR then Zs ,how do you know if the cpc go any further than the CDU

Sorry mate, but this is a classic case of leaping before you look. I always do a survey before quoting for CU replacements. Nothing over the top, but a cursory look in every room and nosey in the loft to see if there are additions which could bite my a**e. Good examples are wall lights, DIYer's love tapping into the lighting live and socket neutral, the RCD loves this type of thing NOT.
I then always state in the quote that it does not include rectification of major problems. I certify what i do, and note any un rectified problems on the paperwork.

You live and learn mate......we have all been there unfortunately.

Cheers........Howard

Always put your ESTIMATE in writing and allow for the relevant tests on all circuits. Also state on your estimate that any code 1 defects will need to be rectified in order to complete the work and that this will involve additional costs. Always perform your tests before removing existing CU and agree on additional work, if required, or walk away.
