As the title says I am sat on here waiting for some breakfast etc etc, while Darrel is out and about doing a couple of little jobs and then he is popping over to drop me a part off for Monday.
I have spent most of my life going to the Bosses house out of hours while he had his feet up, it feels really strange like I am putting on him! and that it should be me running about.
Will I ever get used to it!!

You have earned the right to be where you are through blood sweat and tears...... your obviously a grafter so having a lad doing a bit of the donkey work is going to feel strange to begin with i suppose but it is just recognition of how far you have come !!!!!

Cheers Daz, I don't feel has bad now!!

I think the best bosses are the ones that get stuck in themselves and lead by example. So don't expect your staff to do things you won't do
Bang on Murdoch. When I was an apprentice I was fortunate enough to be given decent jobs and my gaffer at the time did all the crappy little ones. It was then that I decided that when the time came that I was in his position I would do the same. I get stuck into All jobs and don't expect any of my staff to do all the work, and certainly don't expect them to do anything I wouldn't.
Because of this there is respect.

All he has got to do is a fire connection, a 4mm cable to run about 8m through some joists and pick up an mcb from wholsaler, it's not like I'm sending him down the mine for a 48 nonstop shift.

I've been a boss for most of my working life - since 1972 in fact. Yes, I am that old.......
Much of what I do is of a fairly technical nature and can be a challenge.

But, by far and away the most complicated part of the job is managing people.
You have to be a combination of diplomat, agony aunt, mind reader, friend, disciplinarian, juggler, have encyclopedic knowledge of every we've ever done, contact names, suppliers........the history of the universe.......
Besides knowing when to speak up and when to shut up and probably a hundred other things besides.

Ok I will try again. Yes you get used to it.
Tips are -
Don't forget what it's like to be on the tools.
Reward guys with early shoots if they have done more than a days planned work
Every now and then when guys have been doing well for a month or two it is reward to the pub on a Friday lunchtime - then home obv.
Every now and then you will be pushing at the end of a job.....Get your tools out and show them how you can still muck in as part of the team.
If someone is taking the **** 1st 2nd 3rd and final warning and then gone. You have to show you mean it !!!

If you’ve any number of employees then hands on time gets less and less. Time to yourself also diminishes. It’s cost me two nervous breakdowns and two partners.

Just thought I’d cheer you up.

It’s worth doing an NVQ in management. If nothing else it will teach you how to avoid most of the potholes.
