Now Christmas is over, I thought that it would be fun to run a little survey.

Throughout the year there have been many questions raised where folks have debated if it may be possible to connect both a hob and an oven to an existing cooker circuit.

The realists have made a diversity judgement call and, usually, confirmed that everthing will be fine using an existing 6mm/32A "cooker" circuit (even during times of high demand).

To test if the diversity assumptions have been correct, please vote if your phone has been ringing with punters complaining that the MCBs on their cooker circuits have tripped over the festive season....

just put a 32A MCB in the oven with the roast beef joint. i'll let you know if the MCB pops in an hour or so.

Nah a 6amp will be ready to eat quicker, had a C63 the other day, still tough after 4 hours in the oven.

Got a gas cooker

Not voted as don't do house bashing but have had a separate hob/oven for years and its never tripped the 32 MCB. Had the RCD trip once when an oven element went down. N+E fault.

Nope, but I did have a bloke ring me Thursday night, saying he had some light fittings he wanted putting up and some dimmer switches replaced, 'ohh and I want it done this side of Christmas'.

I was too busy drinking Xmas booze, at our works do. If I could of been arsed, it would of cost him more than £60.

My ovens' thermal cut out kicked in on Christmas Day, that caused a bit of consternation.

is consternation when you cook up the leftovers? we got leftover turkey, beef, taters, sprouts and some other shyte festering away in the fridge. today we're having consternation surprise.

We had the full traditional Christmas lunch at home this year, as usual.

I have an 'Owl' power recorder linked to my meter tails. It records current at 1 minute intervals and stores the readings for about 30 days. You can download the data and import into a spreadsheet.

I have the data for mid October to early November and for December. Power figures assume 240V supply and unity power factor.

Exceptional minimum 0.626A, 150W.
Usual minimum 0.7A, 168W.
Average power used (over year) 2.4A, 572W.
Maximum in October 30A, 7.2kW.
Max in December 34.6A, 8.3kW, Wed 21 Dec, 14:15
Max on 25 Dec, 29.5A, 7kW
Days with peak above 30A in October: 1
Days with peak above 30A in December: 2

The minimum power will be less than shown due to poor power factor on many low current devices (PIR sensors, etc.)

Gas central heating. No electric space or water heating or electric shower.
Electric double oven and induction hob.

I recon the whole house would be OK on a 30A fuse or breaker unless the gas heating fails. Even then, there's a limit on how many electric heaters you can lay your hands on.
