Just started PAT testing and trying to understand why stuff fails. Recently had a large fridge fail. The cable was scuffed with a slice of the flex missing so the yellow wire was visible but not the copper. The readings on the tester were 0.6 plus in various places. Could it just mean the cpc is damaged so a mew cable is all that’s needed or could there be something else going on. Out of interest I did other tests which it passed.

Obviously I did fail it and removed the fuse and told the Damsel to call an Engineer but wanting to learn the whys...

What particular test failed, and what units is the 0.6 figure in?

Were you testing the painted door that's got plastic hinge pins?

More than likely. Also worth checking earth connection in plug (as usual).

The IR test joins L and N together and tests between them both and cpc.
If cpc is questionable then this test doesn't really mean a lot, and will need doing again once cpc is functional. For example if cpc was completely cleanly broken this test would still pass.

I've had fails due to corrosion on the earth plug. A good clean with a scourer type pad soon had things passing again. This has mainly been on 110v commando plugs but I have seen it on BS1363 plugs that have lived a harsh life.

That post of mine should have said 'earth PIN' and not 'earth plug' ?
