Hi everyone, I'm Craig from Essex.

I'm in the final stages of a training course to become qualified as an Electrician. I'm completely new to the world of electrics but am learning fast. I've got my 2391-10 written and practical exams next week. I'm unemployed at the mo so I've been studying hard. Next step, find a job or register with NIC/Elecsa or similar and go self employed. I think I'd rather be employed at first to gain experience.

Any help/tips/advice/suggestions welcome!

PS - Anyone want a willing but inexperienced Electrician for an employee?! :D

Cheers

I was concerned to read that you were doing your 2391-10 without working in the industry. The City and Guilds qualification hand book for the 2391-10 course quite clearly states

"This qualification is intended for experienced personnel working in the electrical industry. Although City & Guilds does not state formal candidate entry requirements, the qualification is not intended for non-qualified electricians and/or those who do not have experience in inspecting, testing and certifying electrical installations.

Candidates without this experience should seriously consider undertaking the City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate in fundamental inspection, testing and initial verification (2392-10) as well as obtaining industry experience."

I would strongly recommend you check with your course advisor as your exams will expect you to be able to draw on existing knowledge and experience from already working within the industry.

Check out Certificate in Inspection, Testing and Verification of Electrical Installations | Construction and Building | Electrical installation | City & Guilds and read the PDF at the fooot of the page.

Good luck

Thanks everyone.

JLD - I've done my 2392-10 theory but still need to book the practical exam. My course tutor seems to think it's ok for me to get the practical exams booked in asap so that's what I did. Once I've done the exam I'll know whether it was a good idea or not! I guess I'm going by the driving licence style of learning, ie you get the driving test passed and then you really learn how to drive. I want to be qualified so I can approach companies who will hopefully take me seriously, then I can build my experience.
