I have recently received a letter from my local college regarding my application for Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installation.

They have invited me to an assessment and an interview on the 10th July.

When I applied for this course, I was actively looking for work and claiming JSA, around 5 weeks ago I got a weekend job at Tesco working nights (15 hour per week contract) so the job center stopped my claim altogether as they said I would be earning too much.

I am currently in two minds and really worried as to what this means as I obviously cannot afford the tuition fees.

Initially I would have got funded due to claiming JSA, but now that obviously isn't going to be the case.

Does anyone have any ideas on the situation that this leaves me in? because I have been waiting to get onto this course for ages and as far as I know, I am now totally ****ed and my assessment/interview is in 4 days time :(

I am 21 years old and I applied for this course at Milton Keynes College.

You need to get out of the Job and get on the course and in a couple of years you will be earning a lot more money as a spark than working nights at Tesco's

Tesco is a bloody awful job, but I was happy to stick it out until college.

Quitting Tesco would just leave me unemployed.

However, as far as a I know, being 'unemployed' isn't good enough to have you fees waved... you need to be actively seeking work and show proof of it, i.e JSA.

Fair play I admire you for sticking out the Tesco's Job. Go to the interview and the college should advise you. When I did my course you could do it full or part time so you might be able to do the course and work a Tesco at the same time as for the fee I'm sorry but I don't know if you can get any founding, have you tried contacting any local electrical company's ?

I don't want to work at Tesco part time mate, I just wanted to work there until I start going to college. The course that I am applying for is full time (16 hours per week).

I am thinking that I should just quit Tesco's after this weekends shifts, and then say that I am out of work when I go to the college on Wednesday for my assessment/interview.

But... if they turn around and say you still need to pay the fees because you aren't claiming JSA, then that means I have no job and can't go to college.

Don't quit your job until you've been to the interview as they will properly know the best course of action I think if you just quit a job you want get the support you kneed .I think you would have to be made redundant to get help . Any way good look

I'm just going wait until I go to the college on Wednesday. Surely there are some options for me...To be claiming JSA you have to be actively seeking work, so if a job comes becomes available you MUST take it. If you don't actively seek for work, you are not entitled to JSA anyway.

So i'll just say that I have been waiting for ages to get onto this course, whilst actively seeking work because I have to whilst claiming JSA.

The course advert does also state:

If you are aged between 19 and 23 on 1st September and looking to enrol on a first full level 2 qualification, you could qualify for free tuition under the level 2 entitlement scheme.
But I've read online that it is not easy to qualify under the Level 2 Entitlement Scheme.
