A lot of the older guys in this line of work still free climb despite the ever tightening H & S regs and there are times when it is safer to free climb than be attached in my opinion

The worst part of that job isn't the dropping of a tool it's when you get up there and realise you have left one of the tools you need in the van and yes it's happened to me

I always say a fall never killed anyone it's always the landing that does the damage

Unlike yourself ung, I havn't worked at anything far off the ground,never mind the superhauman type but,I suspect the worst case is going to be, forgetting that tool,climbing back up then dropping it

It's always the small fiddly tools when your hands are cold that go overboard as it can be difficult to attach a lanyard to them

The most frightening story I heard was of a guy abseiling down a block of flats clipping cables when one of the residents took offense and cut his ropes fortunately he had nearly finished and was only a couple of feet off the ground. I always made sure after hearing that there where no windows within easy reach of my ropes when abseiling

madness i know what you mean with the butterflies watching it, you would not catch me anywhere near that line of work. i don`t mind being high if i feel safe i can feel safer at 200+ feet than at 15 if your strapped in but free climbing nah sorry not for me and i hope whoever does it gets paid fortunes for it.
