Discuss Metal Halide High Bay vs Fluorescent Lighting in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

Does anyone have ideas as what would be the most suitable lighting scheme for an industrial workshop with a floor area of approx 2500 square metres and reasoning why; either high bay lighting or fluorescent lighting. The lighting would be installed at over 6 metres high and would require lux levels of over 750 lux at floor level. Many Thanks.

I would go fluorescent fitting prob t5 twin high output fittings switched via contractors. More efficient I believe. And because I hate metal halide high bays lol

High Bays are not my choice, low bays yes, however as mentioned above T5s are a great alternative, you can get units with 6 lamps in these days, then again if it were me I would get a lighting manufacturer in to design the job and take responsibility over the project, they will work out what lights are required for that enviroment and the lux will be spot on, they allow for natural light entering the building also, IMHO it is a little beyond our scope, get a Manufacturer in, thats My advice.

Thats a toughie, 750 is pretty high and fluorescents are past their best at that height.
Is this a standard workshop (industrial unit) with no reflective surfaces and all ?

Whats being done in the workshop ? Is MH not liked, if not you may be down to task lighting

Yeah as mdj says they do a "fluorescent low bay" now. I've fitted these in a chain of lorry workshops who we look after (11depots) and I was really impressed. We replaced 400w hqi's with 4*55w flobays as there called. It was NVC lighting and they did the scheme and a savings plan against the hqi.

fluorescents have faster start up from automatic controls and repeated switching.

that my useful post for tonite out of the way.
;-)

yes 750 is too high IMO, 350-400 at desk level is adequate I'm sure, where did the 750 come from, I have a feeling who ever told you this is out of their depth, get a manufacturer in.

Agree with above, got to get a specialist in, there may be more to it that simply Lux, evenness of light level, colour temp, and all that.
E.g. is 750 the minimum in all working areas or the average, as the spacing and hence cost will come into play as well.

750 is high IMO at floor level, I would suggest sunglasses, however only a Manufacturer will know whats right and wrong, it is what they do.

This. We've used NVC before, they design it all with nice drawings and coloured plans and you install it. There very helpfull. They give off nice light too the flobays, each flobay had its own PIR on too...

Providing there is no water in the boat haha, if you read a thread with sailor in it earlier you would understand the post lol

CIBSE Guidlines state 750 lux level at floor level for this particular type of working environment. It high precision engineering work that will be carried out.

Many thanks for your advice guys. Much appreciated.
