I have a mates brother needing some work doing in the newcastle area. I'm trying to price it but don't want to out do myself or on the other foot charge too much to a mate in effect. The work is:

Change a consumer unit (10 ways)
Sort out earth to gas and water
Move a light
Add 2 sockets in a bedroom.
Test whole installation

I was thinking 300-350. Does that sound too much?

I'd probably charge that to a good mate but not the brother/friend of a mate.

But then I have just charged a customer £80 for a day and a halves work so my estimating skills obviously need improving..... :(

Don't discount mates or family - you are doing this for a living, not a charity.

If anything say you'll do the LABC notification for free so they think they are getting a discount.

Far too cheap and it's not your mate, it's his brother so unless he can return the favor I.e he's a mechanic etc then it's two days labour £150 a day??? I guess as youve not put any description down. Plus materials roughy £150-£200?
By the way it's just an educated guess

that's stupidly cheap.

without testing first, you could end up being on the job for days if the installation is riddled with faults that will only be shown once an RCD is connected to the circuit.

at least £500+ for the board change and testing

£60 a socket outlet

at least £150 for bonding (unless its really close to DB)

etc...

materials would cost more than £300 ? lol

so, why dont you want to do it?....

well for a start....gas & water are extranoius....and as such are bonded......so get your terminology rite....if your gonna come in here....
rite...to business...
new C/U...cert n test (a definate)...£300
then theres movin that lite.....£????...put it on time £25 per hour plus materials...
gas and water bondin....depends....are they in close proximity(ish) to each other?...if so then go from ext one to ext 2....keep it continuous.....that keeps the cost of cable down....whilst still being compliant.....hmm....put £80 on it...
2 more points in bedroom.....go for £35 a point....just to cover your arse......
and so that little lot adds up to....

£485......

id say if you like them/friendly, id say charge your hourly rate and materials, and say something along the lines of hopefully 2 days max due to nature of electrical installations.. be straight with them so max cost materials + £320 but could be less if you finish quicker. and be confident in how you say it

I'd charge more than £500 to just change cu and up grade bonding, with the other stuff and testing probably around the £900 mark. But hey, If you don't believe your knowledge and skills are a valuable commodity, more so than decorating kitchen fitting or plumbing etc, then charge as though this sort of work can be carried out by anybody with no skills, qualifications, experience…

I've got no idea what the going rate is in the north east, what Glen says is about right for here though. I don't do mates rates any more but will let them know that notifying is free to them.
