Look on the relay and you will see a diagram in the form of a 2 way switch the common will have a number beside it ie 1 then the Normally Closed contact 3 Normally Open 2

Easy way to check is put a meter set for ohms or a bleep accross 1 and 3 (numbers should be marked on the relay base) and with the relay de-energised you should get a circuit now check 1 and 2 and you will not get a circuit until you energise the relay ie check the coil rating 24vac or 240vac if 240 then apply 240 accross A1 & A2 then you get a circuit accross 1&2 and no circuit on 1&3

Relays come in 2 versions 8 pole and 12 pole

8 pole is A1&A2 plus 2 sets of contacts
12 pole is A1&A2 plus 3 sets of contacts

that will work for a conventional relay, the op wants to check a solid state relay, no coil or moving contacts;)

pmac10 is correct. It runs off a plc 24v and makes a contact at the other end to connect 230v. There is no a1/a2 or n/o, n/c terminals just the 4 terminals. It has 24v going in but nothing coming out. Just wondered if there was a way to test if its faulty. Its a crydom solid state relay from RS rates at 2 - 32v dc.

i know the one you mean mate, the labels may have worn off, but if you can identify the two terminals which should have 24vdc across them, check you have it, if you do, thats your 'A1/A2' so to speak, coil energised. go to the other two terminals, you should have 230v to earth at, at least one terminal, your 230v in, if your 'coil' is energised, you should get 230v at the other, otherwise its no good.
semiconductor devices are either conducting or insulating. with no 24vdc at the upper terminals, the lower 2 are insulated from one another, with 24vdc present at the upper terminals the lower ones are in a conducting state:)
(as an after thought, if you have no terminals labelled, bear in mind you can mount these upside down:()

Cheers mate. The labels are ok and I have 24v at the bottom where its supposed to be but no voltage at the other end. Wouldnt mind but its brand new. Or well, Ill just order another and the company will pay for it.
Cheers for the feedback:D.
