Hello,

Can anyone help me please. I am trying to identify the rating of the cutout in this service head. It has been boxed in and can't tell what it is . Can anyone here tell by just looking at the photos below?

Many thanks for any help.

Chris.

My client wants to add some power to an outhouse. If only a 60 extra power won't work. 80 or 100 and we are all good. The size of it looks to me like a 100 but can't be sure. What do you think?

Impossible to tell what size fuse has been installed by the DNO without visually checking the fuse rating. Can't even take an educated guess these days, because of the idiots that will provide 25mm tails as a matter of course, even for 60A rated service fuse....

How big is the house? It must be pretty damned big if 60A won't stand a bit of power to an outbuilding!

I think you need to consider the load on the existing installation then what you are adding properly

that little bit of bakelite round the wire is pretty fragile. seen loads snapped off.

I am confidant that is an 60amp cut out.

Well it currently has a bit of SWA as a seal at the minute .

Although we did inform the DNO of what is currently fitted so its up to them now to sort it. Thankfully we were fitting a 100 amp Switch fuse so 25mm tails from the meter are adequately protected regardless of what size fuse is fitted.

Ha! Yes I almost called in the seal fairy when amazingly my client came in and had got through to her supplier (British Gas) who told her that it is a 100A fuse. Quite easy in the end. Happy days. Her outbuilding dreams can come true.

Thanks all.

Yeah right, that's a standard stock answer, they haven't got a clue what is actually fitted.
I'm fairly sure that design of cutout is only rated to 60A as that was the norm in the days when they were fitted.

I still don't see how this is going to affect a supply to an outbuilding, unless it's a massive house with an unusually large load on it!

Hi Dave,
Ye a large enough load to make me ask the question- electric shower etc etc. Chance if there is enough going on in the house and people in outbuilding are drawing quite a bit then there could be trouble.
I was very surprised that the supplier confidently told her that it is a 100A. But if that is what they said then it is what we have got to go on. They are coming to isolate the power in a couple of weeks to change the metering so we will see then. I will reply to this post to let you know what the fuse was in the end.

Thanks,

Chris.

There's a picture of my grandson as my avatar mate. Can you tell from that what his name is?
You're asking us to speculate in the same way. I think if you look really hard you might find those seal fairies mentioned ealier have been.

I would definitely get the seal fairies to whisper you the answer. If not, then assume 60A and apply diversity in the usual way. I would certainly be ignoring the advice of the supplier to assume the maximum possible fuse.

Not sure how BG the supplier would know what size fuse is fitted as it is the DNO's equipment and they wouldn't be able to tell you the fuse size.

Have you ever actually measured the load on a domestic property, I mean properly with a data logging meter for a week or more. You'll be surprised how wrong you are about the load getting anywhere near causing a 60A BS88 to operate!

^ Data logger could show 33 minute intervals @100A,with that 60A in...maybe more if Cut-out in a draughty spot...:icon12:

The chances of seeing 60A on a typical 3 bed dometic installation for 33 minutes would be remote, let alone 100A!! lol!!

Virtually every response from mine is one of stupidity and contradiction, I've given up on talking to him most of the time.

Oh, and everything is rubbish unless he has it, or one of his mates has said that it's good.

hmm your right it sounds like the same guy.

he is an idiot and i do avoid talking to him

So how long have your step dads been around lads?
If it's been a good while you might find, if you think back, that this miserable old wnkr has done more for you than you might think.
Obviously there's a chance that they might actually be miserable old wnkrs but you never know.
One of my mates has step kids and I overheard one of them bitching about him once to his mates. So I embarrased the ungrateful little barstool by telling him, in front of his mates, about some of the things he did for him. Like taking him to A&E at 2AM and staying with him when he was really ill, like when he had a problem at school and the miserable old wnkr took a day off work to resolve it. Like when one of the neighbour's kids was picking on him and he stopped it.
All things that a real dad has to do I know but sometimes I think step parents get a bad deal

Always found that to be the problem with stepdads, never gonna have the father son relationship into adulthood if you're completely different people.

He's good as gold in general and as a person and has done a huge amount more for me than my real dad. We just don't get on when we sit and talk, and he has far too many issues niggling away at him from when he was growing up.

It's infuriating to talk to him as he either contradicts what you're saying, thinks that you're wrong or lying, or come out with such stupid things that it's clear he has no idea what he's talking about. He's a nightmare.
