Street lamps

I have a couple of street lamps to replace, they are up high on posts (just as you'd see on the side of the road) the defusers are broken and lights not worked for a very long time, my customer wants new head units fitted to the posts as they are likely to be water damaged.

Does anyone have any experience in changing these units? I understand there's a few different types with different threads to the fittings..

Anyone have any good websites to give me more detailed info on the different types of street lamps there is?

The only way I can see me doing it is hiring a lift to get me up to the light, taking it off and then trying to find a match somewhere and get them ordered, then come back to fit?

Is there a universal type fitting that can be brought and fitted to the post?
Do you know any wholesalers that keeps them in stock..?

always try and blag some from highways at local council depot

TPES, it might sound a daft idea, but why not go to the lights, take the access cover off the bottom and see if there are manufacturers details there or on the post itself, and also photograph the head and show the wholesaler that and get them to source it for your. When you say hire a lift, do you mean a cherry picker, or scaffolding? You will pay a fortune delivery and collection for the cherry picker just to do a 5 minute job taking the head off, then you will have to pay all over again when you get the new parts!

Normally you will find that the diameter of the column head is standard and most light fitting manufactures make some sort of street light head. it depends whether you want it to fit directly on the column or you want one with an arm on it so that the light is a distance from column.

I used to install street lighting an sports lighting up in the north east. Most columns have standard fittings. Try having a look from ground level to work out height and what style of fitting to get. The column will more than likely be same diameter at head height as it is at the top. Order lights from supplier (I know name of company in north east that deals in them if need it) and wire them up with some artic flex at house or back of van ready. Use a cherry picker to go up take old one down and put new one up, cable just drops down column. Then wire straight into the cut out at bottom. Light fixes normally with 5mm hex key.
Column heights normally start about 6metres an go up 8,10,12m etc.
You might be lucky and have a column that drops down to floor level if it's hard to get cherry picker in.

Just be careful, if they are old then all the control gear may be in the bottom of the column as opposed to in the lamp head itself.

Open up the cover at the bottom of the column, there may even also be some info on the inside.

you would probably be better persuading client to change to a more redily availabe fitting and lamp combination as Sox will no doubt be phased out by the EU

I don't know much about the different types of street lamps as to what will fit on the head of the post, how do I know what head unit will fit???

Anyone have any links as to what will fit?

Some councils now are demading any street lights fitted are what is known as dark sky so that any light is directed in a downward direction thus cutting down on light pollution.

On a side note.. Went to a "suppliers day" held by Neweys (Didn't even think we had a Neweys account but never mind) there was a guy there peddling LED streetlamps.
I we were well impressed they were so bright and the light was really crisp and white, can't remember the power consumption but that too was also impressively low

I would contact Philips and ask what alternatives they do now that would replace / upgrade the fittings you have

Also look at Thorn, Holophane and the other major manufacturers for other alternatives

Most steel lighting columns are 76mm diameter at the top and if they are concrete columns you can fit an adaptor, I cant remember the diameter of the arms though but that should be easy to find on the web

never mind light /power consumption COST lol i was brousing a suppliers cat other day n a nice LED flood caught my eye they the price £1000 floored me Im still shaking

the fitting you have shown has a U bolt arrangement If memory serves me correctly its about 50mm spigot they are pprone to leaking and gathering water we use to drill a hole at either end of the visor to let water out

Ive just ordered some philips SNK070 there SON instead of SOX, photocell included, hopefully do the trick
