I want to scale up my business and start going for larger contracts maybe government ones and also larger site works

how do I best go about being in with a shout on this?
I don’t have any experience in tendering for large jobs. All my work comes from word of mouth or check a trade etc.

Do what I do

Think of a number and multiply by 3

Sometimes its not just the cost, but also what you can offer over others, it can be difficult to win a tender when you are up against experienced companies that already have their foot in the door. Going in too cheap is not always a guarantee either. In fact it can sometimes have a negative effect because often companies will be suspicious of prices that are way under other competitors.

One thing also to watch for is make sure you do your homework and cover yourself. You will find that doing site works there can be delays out of your control, lots of red tape and many other trades to deal with.

On the plus side you can potential make some decent money if you land the right contract and have no major issues.

Oh also make sure your liability insurance covers you for all aspects of the job. You may find some clients will insist on a certain minimum cover.
