I have an 8.5kw Triton Excite Plus shower, could there be a reason that it has been installed with a 50amp isolator switch, & not 40amp which Google suggests would be the compatible for a 8.5kw shower ?

8.5kw will will draw approximately 37A therefore your isolator needs to be the equivalent or preferably above hence 40A, a 50A isolator is actually better.
