We've all been there ...

The customer has found a £47 consumer unit on the web, and is querying your £120 price under materials. When I told the customer I preferred to use well-established brands that I was familiar with fitting I was sent a link - "There!" the customer said "... it's Wylex and it's ONLY £38!" Er, yeah, but where are the circuit breakers? "Do we really needs those as well - look - it's got TWO RCDs - the things you were telling me I needed!"

"Oh, and by the way, will you be able to fit this shower head at the same time? It's got LEDs that change colour with the water temperature - really cool!"

And the price of the LED-lit showerhead? £195 - and she's balking at £50 for a consumer unit.

The problem we have here is 'branding' - What the hell's is a 'consumer unit' when it's at home. I mean, with a fuse board you basically get a sense of what it is doing. But who invented the term 'consumer unit'? The very term tells the consumer: "Yeah you need one of these, but make it as cheap as possible."

If we're going win the argument with customers - and increase business from improving the safety of domestic electrical installations - we need a new term - something sexy that will scare the pants off a customer, making them say: "Oh Yes! I DO need that, make it the best, put two of the suckers in to be on the safe side!"

Better yet, get the manufacturers to start adding a few winking LEDs - red and green - cost pennies but will make that beige box look like it's actually DOING something.

I'll generously offer a Liked to any of the best suggestions for a new term - and will forward the to IEE and ESC. Can't say fairer than that!

As Murdoch says, I put what work is expected to be carried out by myself and then just give one final figure for the cost.

why not call it a kitchen ? that'll be good for 10 grand or so. or a wet room control unit.? 6 grand.

Yep give them a price and thats it when I can asked can you break it down for me I say no it is a fixed price quote and if I get I can buy this on the web for xx pounds yep ok then I can only give you a cost and if they push it I ask did you do the same when you bought your new (£25K) car or when you paid IKEA for that £10k kitchen thats when it all goes quite .

Dont get angry just rise above and take a professional pragmatic approuch because if they are going to that level then you dont need it.

In the dim and distant past I was involved in the design of a piece of electronic kit (I think for the British Army). Internally, we called it the PFM Box. Can't remember what it did, but the initials stood for Pure F'ing Magic, so it must have been good!

Maybe it would help if they looked a bit trendier, eg chrome with pointless flashing lights or illuminated blue legend, or pink.

How about
Phase Earth& Neutral Isolation System
We could make some sort of acronym for it, "Oh Mr customer, your PENIS needs to be replaced"

So adding extra ways becomes a penis extension?

This is (for a change) a serious thought: what about if we started installing boards with RCM/useage meters fitted? Gives the customer something to look at, major bling factor, yet also actually serves a purpose and genuinely useful? People seem happy enough to pay £25-30 for an OWL monitor.

What we need is for one of our friendly forum sponsors to find us the right device at the right price!

Great idea. If we could buy a cu with one built in the customers may be happier with something to play with. (I'm talking about RMC and not Trev's P.E.N.I.S. lol)

If they are chromed with flashing LEDs etc. the customer will want them mounted in a prominent position to impress the neighbours/visitors etc. the days of the meter cupboard are numbered :D

How about all-RCBO board with a small backlit LCD display on the front of each RCBO showing the power being used on that circuit.

I think "essential kitchen and bathroom supply unit" would make more sense. As already pointed out, if it has either of those two words then money is no object. In fact, add another zero.

Great suggestion. Either that or a pink CU; birds will buy anything which is pink:
"I got my electrical switch box thingy changed - it cost a bit extra but I like it 'cos it's pink".

I was working at Carphone Warehouse when I think it was the Vodafone VK530 came out; I had a barrage of women coming into the shop asking if we had "that pink phone".

If this is staying in the Arms, when I worked at Tesco Mobile they had this pink phone which looked like a makeup thing which birds use. It was probably directed at young girls but almost every one failed within the warranty period.
'Newgen C800'. Worst phone ever.... "But it's pink and girly!!!"
