I'm looking for some advice on wiring the above unit in a new build property.

K5837

Can these units be spurred directly off the ring main or do they need an FCU in line before wiring the module? Would it be better to wire off the lighting circuit rather than the ring main?

Many Thanks.

whats wrong with a plug in usb adapter ? lol

look up the PDF on the mk website for details.

im pretty sure they will need to be fed from a FCU.... thats even if there mains powered ! LOL

The PDF doesn't give many details although the terminal will accept 2.5mm2 T&E. Yes they are mains powered.

cant help then mate.

you will probably find they will want you to fit a euromodule fused connection unit in a module next to this usb module

I'm sure you just fit them as sockets, as I've seen double sockets with one socket and one USB.

But do check first...

A bit immaterial now as MK have emailed me to say product no longer available. Current offering has been discontinued. A replacement is due out but not until later this year.

I also found that the MK product is no longer available. I got one from Euronetwoks web site, I think it is the same as the MK product.

Yes off the mains is fine - I spoke to MK and they said this is why the units have taken so long to come along (as opposed to other cheaper brands) as they had to re-invent the coil to ensure heat/emc compliance etc.

To comply for installation in place of a socket they have to be BS1363 compliant, and they are not, another reason for the discontinuation by MK Electric. The units they are releasing later in the year are fully BS1363 compliant and also have a version that can be mounted using a grid switch back plane apparently. MK do recommend that these are protected by a spur with a 3A fuse installed.

I've spoken to MK who tell me that they've released a new version of the MK5837 in June 2013 that does not need a separate fused spur and should be installed in a similar manner to a regular 13A socket. Additionally, the unit meets all relevant BS standards. It supports current Apple devices (known for their fussiness with 3rd party chargers).

They tell me that the original model - which they discontinued - never entered the supply chain, so any K5837 units available now will be the new model. Anyway, I'm not an electrician so if you require any further information then your best bet is to contact MK.
