I know in my own mind what I consider to be the most important industry that mankind undertakes, but I'm interested to see how quickly people on here can get to the same page.

So, what do you consider to be the most important industrial activity and why?

I shall reveal my own thoughts later.

smoke breaks. obvious reasons.

Mining brings all the core materials needed for everything else. It started with a spade and shuvle

we give them light and we always under pressure , ungrateful baskets

Farming. I'm not far behind though, I wire pumping stations and boreholes ect, so that the rest of you lot can have a cup of tea and a bath. By god you need it lol

Highspark, you got it. I have a nephew who thinks that food comes from the supermarket, cows drink milk, etc..

I'm trying to get him to understand WHERE things come from and how it's all connected.

YES of course mining, in the sense of extracting raw materials from the ground, so in this sense includes drilling for oil and gas, is the most essential activity that we as humans undertake.

How do we get the kids to understand the basics of where we are now as a species, rather than running around with clubs trying to gather food.

I've thought about where you are coming from johnboy, but my thinking always leads back to even the early days, and where the tools for farming come from.

Well when them scientits and telectrix start growing pigs for our ham sandwiches , then bye bye farming

Anyone been watching 'The story of wales'? Amazing history of Swansea and the copper industry. Really cool exhibits in Swansea Museum about the whole thing too.

Is there a place in northumberland, if thats how you spell it? , where electricity was first produced with a water turbine???

Yes .......... that's Cragside (google it) ......... Lord Armstrong's place - he of the Armstrong Works as mentioned in "Blaydon Races" fame.

No industry can be considered the most important, all rely on each other. One goes down and there’s knock on effects in the others.

The two main industries I’ve worked in, without either you’d be up to your eyeballs in s**t. Yet neither were directly connected to the other.

I would have said farming is 'the most' important as well - there aren't many things you can do if you haven't got any food. Mining and toolmaking might make farming easier, but I expect you could feed yourself without tools. It might be more difficult and take longer but you could do it; you don't need many tools to pick up the eggs a chicken has laid, or wring it's neck and pluck it.

I wouldn't say all industries are equally important - not by a long shot. There are industries such as telesales, charity mugging or "chugging", dog walking, 'Human Resources', and PAT testing which we could all live perfectly happily without.

Swansea and its copper supplied the world, both with the product and the know how,yes the history of Swansea is surprising and something the city shoulkd take more pride in

Mining, iron and copper smelting, electrical generating all were or are essential industries, but for sheer importance it has to the only industry that the working class could and would not survive without, yes its No1 and always will be,its the breweries

Teaching - without teachers we'd all be daft as brushes.
Or media - without them we'd have nothing to watch on telly.
Then of course there are estate agents - without them buying a house would be a real headache.

Who taught the Teachers?
We managed without telly years ago, so we could manage it again.
Estate Agents, second only to MP's in being very economical with the truth.

Cheers.............Howard

Those that can't teach. Those that can do!

MPs, yes. Imagine where we'd all be without them redistributing your hard-earned and telling you what to do.
