Hi Guys,

I am thinking of working for myself, If so I would be working on my own, how do you chaps find this (to the guys who are out there working for yourself and on your own)? On rewires, pulling cables in etc etc and in general, Generally where I work now I have always got a 2nd pair of hands to help, It seems it could be quite awkward doing this work on your own, Any info/tips?

Also how do you go about signing off your certs when you first setup, as initially you won't be registered with anyone + I believe it can take some time before you can go for registration with NICEIC etc and be accepted?

Which one of the competent person schemes would you recommend?

Any help would be great, thanks a lot :).

working alone is hard, you'll find you become very efficient to compete. i like it tho because i'm easily wound and like to know exactly what has gone into my install.

I'm in the same boat as you goni to the bank manager on thursday for a loan:eek:

I'm goin wiht elecsa for a year or so i think, then full NIC in a couple of years

good luck pal

It can be a nightmare working on your own - I find things taking 5 or 6 times longer than they would with someone else there. I mainly work on my own but now and again get some people in. To be honest on the bigger jobs there are people out there who are glad of the small amount you can pay them and work hard for it....

While you are waiting to register, any notifiable jobs you do will have to be notified through building control. You will have to do at least one of these to get on the scheme I am on and in my area it's £110 a pop. I would recommend doing one big job through building control, then keeping to minor works until you're reg'd.

I recommend ELECSA, provided you are confident you actually know what you are doing. They are top, super helpful, especially good for the contractor (run by the ECA). I wouldnt recommend to anyone to go with NIC at all - NIC is going to be exposed for the cowboy magnet it really is in the near future, I guarantee you.

Very good post mate, and i agree with every word you say.
Its definitely horse work rewiring on your own. I'm 4 years with Elecsa, excellent setup.

Cheers.............Howard
