Hi

I wonder if someone could please offer some advice regarding the replacement of a motor run capacitor on a band saw motor. The motor hums when switched on and the wheels only turn when they are turned by hand and I understand from a bit of research that this could be either the capacitor or a centrifugal switch.

I have sourced the exact capacitor, a LCR M/R 16uF, 440v, twin flex connection and am looking to disconnect the old one and install the new, however, I am unsure how to do this. The connection is shown in the picture below, the little plastic connectors house the ends of the live and neutral cables one of each which come from the capacitor. Is it just a case of cutting the brown and black wires below the plastic connectors - not sure what these are called and connecting new ones? if this is a job that should be done by a pro then I will leave well alone.

Many thanks, Dave

cut the connectors off and bin them. fit a couple of lever wagos.

If it's just those wire nuts then turn them anti clockwise and it should release the cables. Personally I would use a wago or similar maintenance free connector to rejoin the cables.

i think they're squished. don't think they're screw on

If the motor will only start by turning manually then if could be the capacitor, the centrifugal switch or even a winding inside the motor that's damaged. Capacitor damage is more often than not visible to the naked eye, you'll see signs of overheating, distortion and possibly discolouration.

The two hat shaped things in your photo are crimped connectors. You can cut them off and replace them with Wagos or choc block type connectors.

MAKE SURE THE MOTOR IS UNPLUGGED AND THE CAPACITOR IS DISCHARGED BY SHORTING IT OUT BEFORE DOING ANY WORK ON THE MOTOR.

They do look similar to the screw-on type wire nuts but chances are they're crimped and not reusable. Probably saves them a Cent or two during manufacture.

alf.jpegvision express can't compete.

Hi All, thank you all for coming back so quickly. Yes, the connections do appear to be crimped.

The band saw is an Inca 342.186 and has sentimental value as it belonged to my late dad. Will buy a couple of the connectors advised and will let you know how I get on.

Thanks again

Dave
