These abysmally horrible junction boxes would fit in the space you have, if you find a source for them then once you have your supply could you burn down the supplier so that no more could be made! you are sorted.

Well, lo and behold, I took the first fitting down and what do I see? A metal conduit box behind the ceiling that the wires come out of. Perfect, gives me room to terminate and with the fitting in place my IP ratings are intact. Happy days.

As these lights are for a trial and you're set on a particular sealed unit HT I'd be inclined to fit a ceiling rose where the wiring comes through the ceiling and connect the flex there, you could reposition the new fittings slightly or use hook plates and very short lengths of jack chain to give clearance.
That'd be my solution, if the ceiling will allow.
 
This was my first thought, if there isn't room for a ceiling rose as suggested below.

And no, I've never come across a dry lining architrave box. It'd be handy....
