Did the intertia bit mean the fact that you had to hit them with a hammer when they failed to disengage from the fly wheel? Happy days leaning under my 68 MG Midget bashing starter motor with large monkey wrench!

Remember parking my 1300 MK4 Cortina two wheels up on the kerb round the corner from Halfords in Twickenham and changing the starter motor. Other than that the only other fun I had was re setting the points with a set of feeler guages. Crude motoring :)

Replacing a piston in the engine was un but a lot easier then in modern cars, also finding the rubber ball that you pressed with your foot to work the washer jets was under the "bits" of old Axminster carpet the previous owner had cut up and used for floor mats.

Think we’re going OT here but it’s fun. Remember when throttle cable snapped on MG. My old man came out and just tweaked the tick over up on the carb just enough to drive home just using the clutch and gears. One of my dads favorite stories is that in a similar situation with an older MG Y with windscreen that hinged open forwards from the top, they tied a piece of string to the carb, threaded it through the window and just controlled the throttle by pulling the string. This is the same car whose driver seat mountings broke on a steep slope up to a T junction. Passenger had to sit behind the driver to push him forward enough to reach the pedals. :D
