Hi
I need to do something about the insulation in my loft which lays straight on top of my bathroom spotlights.
It's been like this it seems for the last 12 years and we had no idea but now we know!

WHich do you think is the best option?
Simply moving the insulation from where the lights are?
Or buying a fire, vapour and thermal seal cap like from here Downlight Intumescent Fire Covers

Thanks!

move the insulation and consider replacing halogens with LEDs. also, if you have a shower cable in the attic, clear the itchy-poo away from that as well.

get a roll of chicken wire....form it into loops leaving about 300mm or so in diameter...
place over the areas in the loft where the lamps are...that should keep the insulation at bay....

Hi. That's what was suggested by the electrician who came. I know it seems very simple for someone who is skilled at this sort of thing to make but it sounds tricky for me. What about stopping the moisture as the light fittings which have been there for the last 12 years aren't ones specially for bathrooms so I figured the fire covers would be a doable solution for those people like me who are lacking in skills plus the bonus if stopping vapour.

You might really enjoy installing the fire hoods for starters but they wouldn't have any effect regarding vapour.
Before your next question..........no, placcy bags are not the answer

If you want to install those hoods to which you link then they will provide the service you require, just make sure they are fitted directly against a smooth surface. but the cables will limit the vapour sealing.

The easiest thing to do is move the insulation, but then you loose the benefit of it, next cheapest is the chicken wire, then you can go for the hoods.

12 year old fittings, not specially for bathrooms. Be interesting and a wee bit awkward bringing them up to standard with fire hoods IMO. But, they are still working, I suppose.:wink5:

12 year old spotlights in a bathroom is whats known as sailing close to the wind especially with the insulation. The potential risk is too great too ignore and personally i would have isolated them and replaced a.s.a.p .

Seen a guy using metal boiler flue ducting and it seemed to work bathroom was insulated and the heat from the fitting went up the flue so to speak.

Meant to add yep I know it not kosha but it works and it makes you think why they made open fittings anyway
