Yesterday I had a really embarrasing moment with the local DNO,my mate owns the corner shop and last week they replaced a link box outside and also some service joint's,anyway since then he's been having a few problems with one of his ring mains. So yesterday I strolled up to take a look,a quick test and we've got a Zs of 95 ohms on the ring main!Go for Ze and the tester refuses to test, showing volts between N&E,so a quick call to networks, anyway this chap turns up and he tests and gets a Ze of 0.19.He asks mehow I got my figure and I show him my MFT ,recently calibrated I might add,I perform the test again and get the same result, volts between N&E he cracks up laughing and gives the clip on my earth lead a sharp twist! try again and the meter reads correctly. "did you not know those clips are prone to going faulty" he asks "obviously not" I replied with a rather red face.

Are you using a Metrel meter , I've repaired my Metrel leads a few times the green lead seems to be more problematic than the other two

I too have problems with the green metrel croc. A reading of open circuit when doing continuity testing no longer signals alarm bells for me... lol .. means I need to fiddle with the green croc a bit.
A way I have found to get round this when it really won't play ball is to use the green probe, remove the boot, and use the croc there instead of directly on the lead. If a bit awkward it works better.

Glad it's not just me
