If you're a qualified, trainee, or retired electrician - Which country is it that your work will be / is / was aimed at?
United Kingdom
What type of forum member are you?
Practising Electrician (Qualified - Domestic or Commercial etc)
We all know that we can pay for credit checks on firms etc, but I just wondered if it would be possible/desireable/allowed for us to have a sticky here in the Arms on businesses and individuals that us members have had unsatisfactory dealings with?

The logic being that no-one likes to be taken for a ride, so let's help each other out without having to pay £ a time by sharing what we know first.

Thoughts?

sounds like a good idea. could include agencies as well.

I like the idea and although its in the Arms its still could get the site into legal wrangles but i leave that thought to the Mods to decide.

I agree with the sentiment but, I dont think we as a forum would be able to hold such information and could end up in a whole load of bother if a company found out we were doing so and went legal on us.

I can ask the question though.

I don't know, but I think that if it's an expression of personal belief rather than asserted as a statement of fact then it's not libatious, and to present a list of company names wouldn't that I can think of breach data protection.

For example, I happen to think that I believe Wall's Ice Cream is nicer than Nestle's. Nothing in that sentence is going to have Nestle trying to sue me.

I agree but, it's a fine line between an expression of personal preference, defamation and consequently slander etc.

We all know what we mean but, I cant help but feel it will escalate from general commenting to out and out so&so are ******s etc.

Oh, you've done work for them as well, then?

A quid??!!!

It has happened before exactly as Lenny said, I can't remember the name of the company now but there was a lengthy thread in general about one particular outfit all of which was extremely negative apart from when one of their senior guys tried to tell people that they were really nice guys who weren't paying people because of problems. Needless to say he got torn to bits

There are any amount of places where a customer can bitch and moan but there are laws which prevent us from doing the same.

I'll get the ball rolling.

Excell building maintainace Leeds.

Accordfire (arms member if you want to look into it)

Mellon Jones in bramley Leeds. Madder than a bag of frogs. That's a thread within its self!

Sparktech24, used to be based in Culverstone, Kent. Stitched me for nearly a grand when i first started out as a mate, and their working practices are shocking. Lotys of dodgy certs filled out by certain people wuith full co-operation/encouragement from management.

Rockinit start a thread in the arms with a disclaimer that it's only our personal experience with this/these said companies and in no way does it reflect upon its/there professional conduct in a life threatening industry.

I'd start it myself but this is your baby, go with it.

Libel law is a bit of a mine field because if I post something defamatory (in the view of the subject of the post) and it is placed online then the forum is deemed to have "published it" and could be held liable.
Disclaimers do not seem to have much effect once the law gets involved, I had something like this with a local magazine and things were getting a bit dicey at one point.

Well, we could all just try and cram this thread with as much libellous material as possible, make sure our browsers are set to cache the page every 30 secs and hope that admin drag their heels on a decision.....

When I worked for Nestlè I told them Walls made better ice cream.

Think we had this before with CEF. I mentioned that their prices differ from MY quotes to MY invoices. I have proof of this therefore it isn't anything other than factual. I also had to threaten an agency with legal action to get paid. Again I have proof of this and would happily share that proof with the mods if it helped other people from being ripped off. It would take a lot of work to make sure everything was kosher before publishing though.

A quid??!!!

We have a ice cream shop near me in huddersfield, Dixon ice get like a Cone, Ice Cream, Juice and a Flake for 60p =p

They get robbed alot tho which is bizzare because at 60p an ice cream i cant see them holding alot of cash in that there till!

fwiw, the worst it would be would be slander if it's in the arms, and as the best defence against that charge would be telling the truth and being able to back it up, having a rule that posters would have to post up copies of the proof to back up their statements should cover both the posters and the boards from any risk of liability.

IANAL though.

Lenny I know exactly where you are coming from with this one, it's a VERY shady area to get involved in.

I do like the idea however so perhaps with very careful wording to the title in the "Arms" section (out of public view) there could be a thread created where just the Company name is listed. NO REASONS given as to why, that way members can check on here and if the name comes up then they know to avoid. We all know the main reasons why these companies will be listed and the details really aren't important.

:thumbsup

I don't see the problem with allowing members to write 'reviews' of their dealings with customers, just the same as commenting on buyers and sellers on ebay, or reviewing products on Amazon, provided it's described exactly as that (opinion) rather than being a forum-approved blacklist.

Perhaps there could also be a list of companies and customers who are a joy to deal with, to even the balance a bit. Then the facility will have been provided, even if nobody uses it.
