Hi All,

I know this has been asked many times over but my situation is slightly different.

I have been work on oil rigs since leaving the army. I was a Temporary installation electrician in the Army and have been a systems electrician on the rigs. The short of it is I'm s ick of the rigs and want to move into domestic dwellings.

My quals are largely irrelevant from what i can see of NAPIT who i wish to join as a DI.

The rig work covers most of the practical side except for Part P, we used the 17th edition as a template where possible.

My question is what is the minimum courses i need to do to be accepted in the fold.

Am i correct in thinking it is 18th edition course and inspection and testing???

cheers

Ryan

I can understand you wanting off the rigs but why go into domestic. I would try and stay with industrial perhaps even stay with petochem.

You'd certainly be looking at good money (staying petrochem or specialising in hazardous environments etc), ATEX IETEX training on top, if not already done in your employment, throw in confined spaces and rope access and you've got a VERY nice potential for income

Aside, do your level 2, level 3 2365 (Electrical Installation), then 18th, inspect & test, pat (if wanted), get employment then attack the NVQ and onwards; AM2.

Consider Level 2/3 2365 Basic Training and anything further as your 'trade' if you will.

Rigs are a pain in the arse. Supposed to go home today but Fogged in. Same tomorrow probably. But agree with R-fur. Get yourself an onshore gig in the process facilities. My opinion is that Domestic is a race to the bottom. I don’t mean any offence to the Domestic tradesman out there.

I have ATEX and 'ive got some sporadic chem/petro work at Weston Point in Runcorn, Im from Stoke you see.

The main reason I thought about domestic is staying local as I've largely missed my 3 year old growing up so I just fancy staying local and earning a bit to keep us going.

Does anybody know if you can go it alone straight after quals given my experience.

I'm calling NIC and NAPIT today so i'll post my findings.

Ah my neck of the woods over from Runcorn to Warrington. There would be nothing stopping you but if ---- hit the fan you would need to prove compliance and competence (quals help with this - bits of paper arse covering exercise)

Schemes may require qualifications as a requirement of membership but it can't hurt to ask.

Cheers lister, I'm booked for the 18th Edition course anyway, going to get I&T qual as that wont hurt.

Doing that at the new Warrington centre? Not sure of that's only for AM2

The work done there will be done using my APHV qual; hense only sporadic. I need something to fill the gap, or i may take up gardening :|

Spoke to NIC and basically its 18th Edition and an assesment; seemsstarnge that anyone could do this with some DIY knowledge... not safe???

cheers gents anyway.
