Discuss Fire Alarm System in HMO in the Security Alarms, Door Entry and CCTV (Public) area at ElectriciansForums.net

Hi all,

I'm currently doing a complete rewire of an HMO (House in Multiple Occupation). As you know HMO's have special requirements in the way of fire alarm systems/call points and emergency lighting etc. I've pretty much first fixed the property now but the owner walked in the other day and has asked me to double check the regs on the location of my smoke detectors because his last sparks done it differently.

I've always been under the impression that they have to be more then 300mm away from a heat/light source (e.g. a pendant) or 300m away from a wall. All my smoke/heat detectors (in each room and hallways) are around 500/600mm within the room and easily 300mm away form any wall or light.

The owner thinks they should be in the middle of the room more.

Does anyone know if this will pass for the HMO license? I just thought I'd double check with the community before walls start getting boarded!

Thanks. Any help would be really appreciated.

Regs are 300mm from wall - but middle of room wont hurt.

You have to check with the council as they issue the licences - another one to check with the fire Officer I think - its him you have to please.

He will be more than happy to pop out and tell you what and where to put each alarm.
