I looked at a small semi yesterday and there was some very dodgy wiring. The pictures explain it better but before the electrician comes later, i'm curious as to what someone has done.Have they tapped off next door? (Sorry about the text on pics, it was written so the landlord would understand!)

If taken from next door, it is possible that breaker is on a different phase, i.e. you could see 400V between the breaker input and the ever so close cut-off busbar!

Just out of interest, if the brown wire does go to next door and the MCB also connected with the bus bar then what would happen?

Different phases = boom

if on same phasse, nothing. if different phases you'd get an almighty bang.

Anyway, apart from it being lethal what happens legally if its wired into next doors supply?

The supplier will be down on you like a ton of bricks and yes it will be the fraud team.

When "your sparky" comes will you have access to next door?

I guess we will HAVE to have access. I can't wait to see whats what.

I have left it in the hands of the landlord and told tenant not to use that mcb. No idea what the landlord is going to do.He is sending his uncle to fit a new CU!

Update. The tenant said she did two washes and tumble dries today along with usual stuff in house and the meter went up just 1 unit all day. (this was before she was told not to use that mcb)
