Hello all,

New to the site and a quick introduction from me. I am a 28 year old mother of two taking on a complete change of career (after years of thought)

My plan of action is as follows. I am currently doing an Energy and Renewables course at college which finishes in June. In August i start a Pre-apprenticeship Course in Electrical Installation which will take me up to December, i would then start a Modern Apprenticeship in August 2015. Luckily, i think ive sourced an employer willing to take me on so fingers crossed. Seems a long process eh lol? Doesn't deter me in the slightest though, i am 110% dedicated to becoming a fully qualified spark and a damn good one at that :tounge3:

Given my age i am a tad late in starting out but never too old to learn i say. I'm very excited in the future and prepared for the many ups and downs to follow! Any advice will be fully welcome and appreciated.

J

Confused??

Hey all,

Sorry this may be in the wrong place as i didnt know where to post it! My 'new member' thread i posted earlier today isn't showing? Said something about the mods reviewing it but its been a full day lol.

Am i missing something?

Thanks
J

Hi J, welcome to the forum. Sorry about the delay but the staff have real jobs as well so sometimes there's a wait for thread approval

Welcome to the forum, good luck with your training, just make sure that you hold on to the chances that you have, there are few such options out there and you seem to have the best of it.

Go for it and achieve your goals.

Thanks for the replies guys,

Richard thank you for your encouragement, every small bit of it does a great deal for my determination. I set myself up to hit a brick wall but so far so good, although it may just be pure luck and the fall out will come lol.

Just wish Aug would hurry up so i can get started.

good luck with it, gal. it'll be hard at times, but the rewards can be worth it.

Much appreciated :smiley2:

With a support network like there is on here the only way is up. Although i know it'll be far from a walk in the park, the rewards will stay with me all my life and the hard work will have been worth every second.

Find out which books you'll be using on the Installation course, buy them now and start reading.
That should give you a good head start! :-)

Welcome to forume. Good luck with your new direction. Stick with your going into new world of discovery.

Best of luck. Might be worth finding some local Co's who might be willing to allow you tag along for experience.

Cheers topquark. Funny you should say that, as i was thinking of saying to the company who may be taking me on as an app if i can shadow here and there, just to get a foot in the door before college starts.

Was really thinking more of across the range ... a lot of companies don't do the full Domestic/Commercial/Industrial scope. So the one your apprenticeship is with may have a narrower scope than you might expect.

Aaaarrgh i think you may be psychic tq lol. On visiting the company yesterday morning and explaining my plan/path etc, they told me that they have two diff parts of the co. Electronics and Commercial and industrial, but more work in the Electronics side. I said i wanted eventually to work in Commercial, Domestic and he then said we can't teach you to re-wire a house but you will learn installation etc? Hmmm....

Depends on what your longer term goal is. Doing industrial/larger commercial generally needs a larger team (not quite so easy for self employed to start up with, so you'd prob have to go the contracting/agency route). Domestic and Small Commercial you can start up as a lone bod and grow from there, possibly into the industrial side as well, once you had the repuation for good work. If you don't mind being on the cards then the world is your oyster. As Tel says Domestic sucks! Lots of small jobs, crawling around in lofts doing rewires etc .... and lots of competition from your local kitchen and bathroom fitters etc.

Yeah i'm thinking i'll probably change my mind a good few times along the road before settling on a particular field, suppose i won't really know what direction i'll prefer until i start experiencing the work. What i DON'T want to be doing in the future is sitting in a workshop fixing pcb's, brown and white goods etc, i want to be out getting my hands dirty and stuck into bigger projects re-wiring buildings and the like.

good luck on your journey I am also doing my svq3 as an adult apprentice and am thoroughly enjoying it college can be difficult at times particularly the maths but grin and bare the rewards will be great I am 37 so I also am a late starter but man I love a challenge best of luck

Hi,

May I ask what books you needed or any web sites or other resources which you found useful. I am starting a level 5 per-apprenticeship course for Electrical Installation soon so ANY preparation I can get in first will be worth it. What sort of maths do you need at the start?

hi the best of luck i was in the same situation changed direction become a spark now changing again lol if you need any help or advice or learning material more than happy to help and advice

king regards mo
